Intensifying Garden Walls in Winter

14 Jun

DARK & INTENSE: Let green be seen in your garden by intensifying walls in Winter

Intense Green Garden Wall

Intense Green Garden Wall

If you don’t think Winter is the season for painting and working in the garden, here’s a thought.

See how garden foliage kicks out against chocolate and charcoal walls, especially in Autumn and Winter when the light is filtered and the air is crisp. After a shower of rain, greens seem somehow even brighter, and dark walls, richer and more intense.

A good call for a garden wall: to offset foliage, paint it a deep grey or peppercorn. ‘Peppercorn’ is a dark chocolate, while ‘Licorice’ is the most popular charcoal in our selection of Midas 300 colours.

Look how the evocative colour shift of autumn leaves kicks out from a deep donkey grey wall, painted in ‘Storm’. Darker colours create a foil for your garden to get showy.

Be more salvage savvy

“The shot up at the top shows how you can put old unwanted metal work to good use. These not so attractive burglar bars were discarded during a renovation project of mine. We painted them the same colour as the wall, mounted them on a wooden frame and turned them into a trellis for our creeper.” – koekalooks

ENVIROLITE: Water-based, zero VOC & reduced VOC paint product range

Glycol, APEO and Formaldehyde and the less favourable ingredients of paint, which we aim to completely eliminate in time. These substances are conventionally used as paint drying time retarders, preservatives and stabilisers. The Envirolite environmentally friendly paint range has been reformulated without these potentially hazardous chemical ingredients. Currently, many Envirolite products either have reduced VOCs or are ZERO VOC.

Envirolite is able to maintain its low VOC content by making use of Glycol-free colourants, which helps to significantly reduce possible health hazards of paint. Envirolite has been given a “Green Star” rating by the Green Building Council of South Africa and is already way ahead of international standards.

The entire product range at Midas is called Envirolite. Each and every one of these products are vetted through the green filter. Paint & Place stores throughout South Africa provide these green filters, which can be used to evaluate your paint before purchase.

Every tin of Envirolite will have a label on it stipulating whether the paint contains Zero VOC, Minimal VOC, Low VOC or Medium VOC, allowing you to make an environmentally conscious choice. Lookout for these on your next visit. To find a Paint & Place store near you, try using our Store Locator.

Paint & Place makes donation to Kangaroo Mother Care Ward

DONATION: To Kangaroo Mother Care Ward

WYNEBERG Paint & Place owner, Marc Thom, made a generous donation of paint to the Kangaroo Mother Care Ward of the Karl Bremer hospital in Bellville. The ward in mention cares for premature babies but was in dire need of some maintenance care as well.

“I know Ofelia Abrahams, from Pick ‘n Pay Hyper in Brackenfell, who is in charge of community upliftment in the area”, said Thom. “She mentioned that the Kangeroo Mother Care Ward was in need of some uplifting itself and I thought I might be able to help.”

Marc Thom went out to assess the needs of the ward and specified paint from the Midas Envirolite Range containing ZERO volatile organic compounds (the bad stuff). “It was important that environmentally friendly paints were selected for revamping the ward as it houses premature babies”, said Marc.

Marc Thom donated enough Paint & Place supplies to repaint the entire Kangaroo Mother Care Ward, including all the bathroom walls, cubicles, doors and cabinets.

The painting of the ward was done by a group of volunteers who work at the Pick n Pay Hyper in Brackenfell. Ofelia Abrahams and others were hugely grateful for Marc’s generous donation, which coincided with a donation of paint vouchers to a School Golf Day organized by Pick ‘n Pay Hyper. In thanking him, Ofelia wrote, “Wow! THANK YOU so much for your fantastic contribution at a moment’s notice towards the Paarl School Golf Day.”

The new paint job at the Karl Bremer Hospital has made a significant difference and Paint & Place wishes to thank Marc Thom for his generous donation.

The Green Filter Paint Evaluator

GREEN FILTER: Evaluating the VOC content of your paint

AS part of the new Green Revolution, it’s become increasingly important to rethink all aspects of how we choose to live. This includes evaluating how we choose to paint our homes.

Conventional paint contains some nasty stuff – chemicals that are damaging to the environment and to our health. Glycol, APEO and Formaldehyde are all potentially hazardous chemical ingredients that are conventionally used as drying time retarders, preservatives and stabilisers.

These chemicals are known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and can be irritating to the eyes and nose and damaging to the lungs. They also contribute to poor air quality.

The entire product range at Midas is called Envirolite. Each and every one of these products are vetted through the green filter. Paint & Place stores throughout South Africa provide these green filters, which can be used to evaluate your paint before purchase.

Every tin of Paint & Place paint will have a label on it stipulating whether the paint contains Zero VOC, Minimal VOC, Low VOC or Medium VOC, allowing you to make an environmentally conscious choice. Envirolite: Environmentally Conscious Painting

ENVIROLITE: Low VOC Paint

THERE is something really pleasing about the smell of a fresh coat of paint. However, this fresh paint odour is caused by volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and can be irritating to the eyes and nose and damaging to the lungs. They also contribute to poor air quality.

Midas Earthcote has made strong efforts to reduce the effect that their coatings have on both indoor and outdoor air quality. They have reduced the VOC content of their paint significantly and made it available to consumers as Envirolite.

Midas Paints adopts the EU standard which defines a Volatile Organic Compound as any carbon-based substance with a boiling point of 250º C. Envirolite is leading the paint industry in reducing volatile organic compounds and even offers some products that contain zero VOC, which don’t cost any more than conventional paint.

Envirolite 220The nasty chemical that makes paint harmful to our environments is Glycol. Most colourants contain Glycol, which is considered to be 100% VOC. For this reason it should always be ascertained whether the VOC stated is for white or colour-tinted products.

Most manufacturers only stipulate the VOC content of their white paint. Earthcote and Midas Paints have access to colourants that are not only Glycol, APEO, Formaldehyde and Lead free but are also certified Zero VOC. Most Envirolite topcoats are Zero VOC.

Besides having reduced or Zero VOCs, many of the Envirolite products have also been reformulated without these potentially hazardous chemical ingredients that are conventionally used as drying time retarders, preservatives and stabilisers.

Envirolite is able to maintain its low VOC content by making use of Glycol-free colourants, which helps to significantly reduce possible health hazards of paint. Envirolite has been given a “Green Star” rating by the Green Building Council of South Africa and is already way ahead of international standards.

  • Every coating in the Envirolite range is rated according to its VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) content, based both on international standards and our own stringent standards. Every tin of Envirolite is clearly marked – indicating its VOC content.

Creating Polka Dot Wall

Earthcote Summer Promo Feature Wall #4

Polka Dot Wall* Click image to enlarge *

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • 1L Earthcote Granite ‘Isikonkwane Blue’
  • 2L Midas ENVIROLITE 220 ‘The Moat’ 4EGB

CREATING THE POLKA DOT WALL:

  1. Coat your wall with 2 coats Midas ENVIROLITE 220.
  2. Either hand draw circles or have a professional cut-out vinyl stencil made, for a quicker, slicker finish. If you do your own freehand circles, use a dinner plate – carefully measuring out the distance between them to ensure even spacing.
  3. Use a Hamilton’s ‘Perfection’ synthetic bristle brush, which makes it far easier to get clean, defined edges without spilling over the lines.
  4. Apply two coats of Granite inside the polka dot ‘blanks’. If you are using a vinyl stencil, you should paint in one direction consistently, either top to bottom or left to right. Sticking to the same direction will give your finish a slicker, more even finish.
  5. When dry, peel off the vinyl stencils.

TIPS: Order peel-on-peel-off vinyl stencils from Sign Bomb Wall Art (021 447 6075). They deliver countrywide. Get ideas on their Facebook page.

COST: Under R400 for 8m2 feature wall (excluding labour & vinyl stencil).

  • All the products and equipment needed to achieve this Plaid Wall can be picked up at your nearest Paint&Place. Visit the Paint&Place Store Locator to find one nearest to you.
