Intensifying Garden Walls in Winter

DARK & INTENSE: Let green be seen in your garden by intensifying walls in Winter

Intense Green Garden Wall

Intense Green Garden Wall

If you don’t think Winter is the season for painting and working in the garden, here’s a thought.

See how garden foliage kicks out against chocolate and charcoal walls, especially in Autumn and Winter when the light is filtered and the air is crisp. After a shower of rain, greens seem somehow even brighter, and dark walls, richer and more intense.

A good call for a garden wall: to offset foliage, paint it a deep grey or peppercorn. ‘Peppercorn’ is a dark chocolate, while ‘Licorice’ is the most popular charcoal in our selection of Midas 300 colours.

Look how the evocative colour shift of autumn leaves kicks out from a deep donkey grey wall, painted in ‘Storm’. Darker colours create a foil for your garden to get showy.

Be more salvage savvy

“The shot up at the top shows how you can put old unwanted metal work to good use. These not so attractive burglar bars were discarded during a renovation project of mine. We painted them the same colour as the wall, mounted them on a wooden frame and turned them into a trellis for our creeper.” – koekalooks

DIY: Creating a tri-coloured Earthcote Worn Leather wall

Tri-coloured Earthcote Worn Leather

Tri-coloured Earthcote Worn Leather

Guest post by Jenny Mason

Look what happens when you take a bagged wall and apply Earthcote Worn Leather in different colours. Truth be told, this room was not a pretty sight before. It’s a kid’s den in an outside room. And it’s now nicely transformed with paint, thank you very much.

The trick is to be sure that you ‘work’ the paint in vigorously while it’s still wet, at the intersections between the colours. Once dry, seal with a layer or two of Earthcote Worn Leather Wax – buffing it to a sheen. By hand, if it’s a small area and you’re up to it, or with an orbital buffer. The floor was painted in Midas Floor Paint.

This wall was produced by Jenny Mason using Earthcote Worn Leather. If you have any queries regarding this wall, please leave Jenny a comment on her blog Koekalooks and she’ll get back to you with answers.

Woodcote: Varnish for wooden based surfaces

8 Feb

WOODCOTE: Sunscreen for wooden surfaces

WITH the summer rays relentlessly beating down on those of us currently living in the southern hemisphere, it’s essential to apply some protection. For humans, we have sunscreen; for wood, there’s Woodcote.

Varnish is the sunscreen of the wooden world, and applying this to exterior wooden based surfaces is essential for protecting them from the elements – especially harmful UV rays. For long-lasting UV protection, it is recommended to apply a timber preservative. This deeply penetrative, nourishing wax and oil-based preservative has been especially designed for hard woods.

For exterior wooden based surfaces, Midas Paints offers both a classic outdoor varnish and a quick-drying variety. The former is an extra durable, solvent-based, UV resistant treatment with long-lasting active protective ingredients. Quickdry Outdoor Varnish is a water-based timber treatment that provides excellent coverage without concealing the grain. It has been designed for outdoor use, but can also be used indoors.

Indoor varnish has similar properties to outdoor varieties. It too is an extra durable, solvent-based treatment with long-lasting active protective ingredients that is UV resistant. Midas Paints’ indoor varnish does, however, offer a greater aesthetic appeal as it dries to a satin or gloss finish.

For trims, ceilings, wooden furniture and other low traffic areas, a general purpose varnish is available. Midas Paints’ Multi-Purpose Varnish is for both exterior and interior use.

Product Application:

Application of Woodcote products is fairly standard. Wooden based surfaces should always be thoroughly prepared before applying one primer coat of your chosen varnish – reduced 10% with mineral turpentine. This should be followed by two finishing coats of your Woodcote product. It is also always recommended that one strictly follows all the manufacturer’s instructions and allow the correct drying times between coats.

It is strongly recommended that trained and skilled applicators are employed to apply this specialist, textured product range.

NATUREPLAST SUEDE STONE

Natureplast Suede Stone is then trowel applied in one or two applications to achieve the correct thickness. Natureplast Suede Stone can be sealed with a Natureplast Acrylic Glaze Coat if required. Strictly follow all the manufacturer’s instructions and allow the correct drying times between coats.

NATUREPLAST SCRATCH

Product Application: Prepare surfaces thoroughly; apply one coat of the recommended fine aggregate primer. Natureplast Scratch is then trowel applied. Natureplast Scratch can be sealed with a Natureplast Acrylic Glaze Coat, if required. Strictly follow all the manufacturer’s instructions and allow the correct drying times between coats.

STERACON: Midas Steracon Byotrol Paints

LIFE is becoming increasingly sophisticated. Our environment is becoming progressively more populated with greater numbers of people living and working in closer proximity to each other. These changes in our habitat have brought with it an increased exposure to harmful pollutants and diseases.

In an effort to combat these contaminators, a vast range of antidotes, pesticides and detergents have been developed. Though effective in part, these have unfortunately also contributed to the development of so-called “Super Bugs”.

These disease-producing organisms can spread to large numbers of people via food, objects and buildings. Areas specifically at risk of contamination are heated, ventilated and air-conditioned buildings.

One example of a micro-organism which thrives in such an environment is Cladosporium. This colonises the painted metal surfaces of heating vents, air conditioning and ventilation systems – penetrating the paint and causing bio-deterioration – impacting on the quality of indoor air.

Combating harmful microbes with regular, rigorous cleaning regimes are inevitably temporal, since this only provides a limited barrier on most surfaces. Furthermore, surfaces such as plasterboard, bricks and glass-fibre are almost impossible to keep clean. A more permanent solution is clearly required.

Midas Earthcote Paints is proud to offer this solution. Our Steracon Paints range contains the active ingredient Byotrol, which ensures that the bacteria, fungi, mould etc. continue to be rigorously combated months after application.

Steracon is a highly specialised range of products all containing Byotrol – an anti-bacterial, anti-fungal additive with an active ingredient that repels bacteria, fungi and other potentially harmful microbes. Steracon is ideal for commercial and medical environments, such as abattoirs, hospitals, wine production facilities and any other areas that need protection against harmful microbes. Steracon is also widely used in domestic environments and is more and more frequently being specified for bathrooms and exterior walls that get no sunlight. – www.midaspaints.co.za

Very simply, Byotrol contains non-chemical bonds which create a high & low surface tension on the coated surfaces. This severely impedes micro-organisms’ ability to reproduce and grow. In turn, this makes the micro-organisms more vulnerable to the small amount of biocides contained in the coating, which together builds an effective hygienic shield.

Steracon Low Sheen can be used both internally and externally on new and previously painted masonry surfaces. It is also ideally suited for heavy wear areas, such as passages and in bathrooms and kitchens, where it provides both decorative and microbial protection to applied areas.

It is important to note that Byotrol does not provide a chemical barrier, but rather a physical barrier which makes it environmentally safe and non-hazardous to people. Proof of this is evidenced by the fact that Byotrol carries SABS 1853 (food-grade) certification, and is used extensively in food preparation surfaces both locally and internationally. Current Steracon customers include hospitals, winerys, Heinz, Woolworths and Midas Paints.
