SPECIAL PROJECT: Midas Earthcote, Steracon Byotrol paint and Hidden Valley Winery
THE celebrated Hidden Valley Winery in Stellenbosch holds many secrets under the skin. Breakthrough technologies and a scientific approach to the art of wine-making are very much a part of the recipe behind their award-winning wines. So when it came to keeping all the interior surfaces of their cellars in perfect order for wine production, the Hidden Valley Winery project managers called for a best of breed solution.
The solution involved an anti-bacterial paint product exclusive to Midas Earthcote. Midas Steracon paint systems contain Byotrol – an anti-bacterial, anti-fungal additive that repels bacteria, fungi and other potentially harmful microbes. Ideal for any production facility that requires protection against harmful microbes, Steracon products are bio-degradable and fully comply with SABS 1853 food standard.
Steracon is a customised, service-linked solution for industries that depend on hygienic conditions. The range of paints and decontamination solutions is supplied by Midas Earthcote, while the application is independently managed and monitored by Qualytech. A 3-year warranty is supplied – extendable indefinitely with a maintenance contract.
In the case of Hidden Valley Winery, Qualytech worked alongside builders and paint contractor BL Williams, testing the bacteria count on site before painting began. They then re-tested after application to ensure that the bacteria count was safely below 1000 RRU’s – the baseline safety indicator for bacterial presence.
“After our labs have taken successful swab tests of the walls for bacterial presence, we issue a certificate of efficacy to the paint contractor and their client – in this case, Hidden Valley Winery”, says Qualytech consultant John Foyn. “This is a joint initiative with Midas Earthcote, which owns exclusive rights to the use of Byotrol bacteria-fighting additive in South Africa and all SADEC countries.”
Midas Earthcote recently tendered to supply Steracon coatings to nine breweries owned by the largest beer manufacturing group, globally. Besides the obvious value to large food and beverage production plants, Steracon has become the coating of choice in abbatoirs, clinics, hospitals and even a growing number of domestic projects.
Steracon Byotrol paint is also frequently specified in domestic environments, particularly for bathrooms and exterior walls that get infrequent exposure to sunlight, and where fungus is an issue.
