SPECIAL PROJECT: CTICC Triplon paint job

FIVE years after the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) opened for business, it still looks remarkably sparkly and white. It promises to remain so for years to come. This extraordinary building, conceived in collaboration by architects Anya van der Merwe Miszewski, Revel Fox and John Ferendinos, is an iconic contemporary landmark on Cape Town’s Foreshore. Since 2004, the CTICC has excelled in providing a world class meeting place in the Cape, while attracting tourism and creating employment.

“When Midas Earthcote was appointed to supply paint for the project, the issue of maintenance was a real concern, especially considering the harbourside location and the impact of atmospheric pollution,” said Tom O’ Connor, of Midas Earthcote Cape Town. “We had to consider robust, long-life products that would reduce long term maintenance costs, without compromising a smooth high quality finish.”

Being self-cleaning, the Triplon 2000S system used on the CTICC repels environmental pollutants such as fungi, algae, exhaust emissions or shot-blasting residue.

The solution was Triplon 2000S – an ultra-durable paint system developed by Midas Earthcote. The system comprises three coats of paint, offering a self-cleaning, protective finish in either a smooth or a stippled look, depending on the desired aesthetic.

Being self-cleaning, the Triplon system will repel environmental pollutants such as fungi, algae, exhaust emissions or shot-blasting residue. These are important considerations for a building that’s close to the harbour and the freeway.

Triplon comes with a ten to fifteen year quality guarantee, depending on the location of the site. Qualytech, a quality control management company, independently audits the condition of the painted surface before, during, and at various intervals after application.

“We monitor Triplon after application to ensure that the fungal resistance and dirt repulsion properties are effective and active” said Allen Clack of Qualytech. “Triplon is one of the finest solutions for CBD and coastal buildings. It is possibly the only paint system with such a long life guarantee.”

TRIPLON: 8 years on and still going strong!

THE International Convention Centre in Cape Town (CTICC) has welcomed visitors from around the world. It has entertained tourists and locals alike by offering unforgettable experiences. In fact, in just 5 years, the CTICC has become widely regarded as one of the leading convention centres in the southern hemisphere.

And the CTICC plans to stick around a little longer. According to the CTICC website,

“It is the vision of the CTICC to be the best long-haul international convention centre by 2020.”

To stand strong and proud for this period of time, the CTICC needed a strong coat of protective paint. Their paint of choice was Triplon – the specialist product that offers a guarantee of up to 15 years. The first coat of Triplon was applied to the building 8 years ago, and is still looking good.

TRIPLON: A durable, self-cleansing, low maintenance paint system

TRIPLON is the Rolls Royce of low maintenance coatings. It is ideal for coastal buildings or high-rises that need a robust, low maintenance paint solution.

Triplon is a self-cleaning paint system for harsh climatic conditions and environmentally challenging applications. It is often applied to high rise buildings in the CBD or to buildings near the coast.

Triplon was used to coat the prestigious Marina Apartments situated at the V&A Waterfront close to the CBD in Cape Town. The apartment buildings needed a durable, long-term coatings solution that would endure both coastal weather and urban air pollutants.

“Midas has responded to the needs of the construction industry with a range of specialist coatings, each addressing a different need. The Triplon 2000 system is unique”, says Mike Vadas, MD of Midas Earthcote.

The Triplon 2000 low maintenance exterior coating system can be supplied in either a smooth or a profiled finish and can be custom mixed in any colour. Triplon 2000P is often used to cover hairline cracks and slight surface defects, or for aesthetic reasons.

“This is a paint system that not only lasts, but also does a great job of covering hairline cracks and reducing mildew and fungal growth, while providing uniquely high UV resistance”, says Vadas.

Triplon comes with a guarantee of up to 15 years and is water-resistance, dirt-resistance and fungi-resistant. “The system … stays clean and good looking for many years longer than most regular coatings”, says Vadas.

Triplon is currently one of Midas Paints’ highest-demand products, which is understandable due to its ultra-low maintenance, self-cleaning, anti-microbial and durability factors.

Product Application:
Prepare surfaces thoroughly; apply one primer coat of Triplon 2000S reduced 10% with Triplon Thinners followed by two finishing coats of Triplon. Note: Triplon 2000P must be over-coated with Triplon 2000S . Strictly follow all the manufacturer’s instructions and allow the correct drying times between coats.
